Approximately
one million persons cross Lake Champlain
each year by ferryboat. Celebrated as
the most scenic ferry crossings in North
America, the trip offers travelers immense
vistas of land and water. The lofty peaks
of the Adirondacks (max. height 5,344
ft.) forty miles to the west and the beautiful
Green Mountains of Vermont (max. height
4,393 ft.) fifty miles to the east are
panoramic backdrops for this great inland
sea.
Lake Champlain covers an area of about
490 square miles, making it the sixth
largest body of fresh water in the United
States. It is 108 miles long, 12 miles
across at its widest point and has a maximum
depth of 399 feet. Flowing northward from
Whitehall, New York, it drains eventually
into the St. Lawrence River via the Richelieu
River in Quebec.

Your
Gateway to Vermont's Rural Heritage
The
Billings Farm & Museum is a living museum
of Vermont's rural past, as well as a working
dairy farm. The farm dates back to 1871, when
owner Frederick Billings, a lawyer, railroad
entrepreneur, and philanthropist began importing
cows from the Isle of Jersey. His farm prospered,
and today, is still a working dairy, which
operates with this nationally renowned farm
life museum.
The
Billings Farm & Museum is an operating
partner of the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller
National Historical Park, the only national
park to tell the story of conservation history
and the evolving nature of land stewardship
in America. The Park is a gift to the people
of the United States from Laurance S. and
Mary F. Rockefeller, and represents several
generations of conservationist thought and
practice.
